What it costs (2026 numbers, honest)
Accommodation at Ibiscus — winter long-stay rates on request. Studio villas sleep one or two; apartment villas with a full kitchen and separate bedroom sleep three to five. Food is affordable if you cook most nights and eat out a few times a week — taverna mains are modest, seafood a bit more, and a full kitchen means coffee and breakfast at home. A scooter covers the whole island on little petrol.
The internet reality
Stable internet reaches every major village, with 4G in the smaller ones. At Ibiscus, Starlink is the primary connection — excellent in the open and common areas today; in-room coverage for all fourteen villas is being completed by the end of this season, with a fixed line as backup. Pothia and Massouri have the most reliable backbones. Smaller villages — Emporios, Vathy — are 4G or partial fiber; email works, video sometimes stutters.
The community
Small, real, winter-weighted. A handful of remote workers choose the island each winter — engineers, designers, writers, climbers with day jobs — and a few cafés in Massouri and Pothia work happily as laptop spots. The rest happens the island way: conversations over coffee, dinners that assemble themselves, and social-media groups where the island's remote workers find each other.
Things to do on a work break
Platis Yialos beach — south coast, mixed sand and pebble. Akti beach — secluded, tamarisk shade. Myrties beach — small pebbles, beach bars, a ten-minute walk from Ibiscus. Avlakia beach — a soft-sand crescent, shallow, busy in August. Melitsachas beach — a local favourite with clean water. The Chora castle walk — free, one hour, sunset views. The caique to Telendos — ten minutes, three tavernas on the other side. Sea-kayak rental from Myrties — paddle the coast.
Month by month
November to February — quietest, cheapest, warmest days 12–18°C, a few rainy weeks. The community is tight. Flights from Athens are. The island is yours. March to May — climbing season explodes, the nomad crowd thins as prices rise. Great for a workation-plus-climbing trip if you do not mind the crag buzz. June to August — peak tourism, hot days, beach mornings, working afternoons. Prices are high but daylight is long and the sea is perfect. September to October — the sweet spot. Warm sea, autumn climbing, everything open, prices softening by mid-October. If you can only come once, come now.
